Fake gay marriages exposed in London

An increasing number of weddings taking place in London are shams designed to get around immigration laws and enable foreigners to live permanently in the UK. Despite clampdowns by the government, these fake weddings have more than trebled in number in recent years. BBC Inside Out reveals how the situation could worsen as gangs are organising bogus gay weddings for illegal immigrants. These fake marriages are harder to detect, as Alison Cathcart, Superintendent Registrar at Westminster Council, explains. Inside Out also goes undercover and exposes the men suspected of supplying bogus lesbian brides across London. James Brokenshire, the Minister for Immigration and Security, confirmed immigration enforcement teams will be following up the evidence collected by Inside Out. (Courtesy :  BBC )

Angelina Jolie to direct ivory poaching tale 'Africa'

Image
Africa will be Jolie's fifth project as a director Continue reading the main story Angelina Jolie has signed up to direct Africa, a film about celebrated conservationist Richard Leakey's battles with ivory poachers. The screenplay has been written by Eric Roth - who won an Oscar for Forrest Gump. Leakey is former head of the Kenya Wildlife Service and was key to stemming the trade in illegal ivory. "I've felt a deep connection to Africa and its culture for much of my life," said Jolie. Leakey's extreme measures to tackle poachers, including sending helicopter gunships into the national park, have helped Kenya's elephant and rhino populations recover from the brink of disaster. He made international headlines in 1989, when a stockpile of 12 tonnes of ivory was burned in Nairobi National Park. Jolie said Africa is about "a man drawn into the violent conflict with elephant poachers, who emerged with a deeper understanding of man's f

Are all the ants as heavy as all the humans?

Image
"If we were to weigh all the ants in the world, they would weigh as much as all of the people," said wildlife presenter Chris Packham recently in BBC Four's The Wonder Of Animals: Ants. But is this statement true? This claim was originally made by Harvard University professor Edward O Wilson, and the German biologist Bert Hoelldobler, in their 1994 book Journey To The Ants. They based their estimate on an earlier one by British entomologist C B Williams, who once calculated that the number or insects alive on earth at a given moment was one million trillion. "If, to take a conservative figure, one percent of this host is ants, their total population is ten thousand trillion," wrote Wilson and Hoelldobler. "Individual workers weigh on average between 1 to 5 mg, according to the species. When combined, all ants in the world taken together weigh about as much as all human beings." Wilson and Hoelldobler's calculation is based on the idea tha

Turkey clamps down on Syria border after Kurdish unrest

Turkey has begun to close some of its border crossings with Syria after about 130,000 Kurdish refugees entered the country over the weekend. On Sunday Turkish security forces clashed with Kurds protesting in solidarity with the refugees. Some protesters were reportedly trying to go to Syria to fight Islamic State (IS). Most refugees are from Kobane, a town threatened by the advancing militants. IS has taken over large swathes of Iraq and Syria in recent months. Before the latest influx, there were already more than one million Syrian refugees in Turkey. They have fled since the start of the uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad three years ago. Some of the new arrivals are being sheltered in overcrowded schools, as Turkey struggles to cope with the influx. 'Huge numbers' On Friday Turkey opened a 30km (19-mile) section of the border to Syrians fleeing the town of Kobane, also known as Ayn al-Arab. But on Monday only two out of nine border posts in t

I have breasts AND a cleavage! You got a problem!!??". It was re-tweeted more than 7,000 times and the #IStandWithDeepikaPadukone became India's top Twitter trend for hours on the day. The newspaper deleted the tweet, but tried to mollify her, replying "It's a compliment! You look so great that we want to make sure everyone knew! :)" Clearly, Padukone was not pleased with the reply. Neither were many others. She wrote a longish post on her Facebook on Friday, saying that she had "spoken out against an ideology that such regressive tactics are st
